Radiation, types of radiation and its units.

In Physics, radiation describes any process in which energy emitted from a body travels through a medium or through space, ultimately to be absorbed by another body.

Types of Radiation

There are different types of radiations like

+ionizing radiation
-alpha radiation
-beta (+/-) radiation
-gamma radiation

+non-ionizing radiation
-neutron radiation
-electromagnetic radiation
-light
-thermal radiation
-black body radiation

Some of the radiations are shown in fig.

SI Units:
Gray (symbol: Gy) is the SI unit of absorbed radiation dose due to ionization radiation

One gray is the absorption of one joule of energy, in the form of ionizing radiation, by one kilogram of matter.

1 Gy = 1J/kg=1 m2.s-2
